Blog Roll

This is in response to an article by Mr. Kevin McCullough.   Yes, I created a blog specifically to respond to a single article.  Why?  Well, I did it because the article offended and angered me.  Mostly, I did it because comments can only be 2000 characters long, and I didn't want to edit or cut my comments.
First, the article:  http://www.townhall.com/columnists/Column2.aspx?UrlTitle=the_sex-box_race_for_president&ns=KevinMcCullough&dt=01/13/2008&page=full&comments=true
Now, my comments:

Mr. McCullough, I have read your article, and I'm disappointed in you as a person.  Now, many of your readers may be simpletons willing to eat up whatever filth you feed them, but the comments above mine surely show that many people are capable of thinking for themselves.
Now, other people may have said what I'm about to say, but I feel a need to put at least one more intelligent opinion on this page.
I have played Mass Effect.  I own a copy.  True, there is sexual content.  However, the core of the game is about facing a threat and trying to save the universe.  The sexual content takes up only a minute out of a game that can run over thirty hours.  That hardly sounds like the hard-core sex simulator that you describe.
The actual sex scenes in question are very mild, in all reality.  The only thing that can be customized is the appearance of the player's character, as well as a choice between one of three potential partners.  No actual acts are graphically depicted.  I've seen more graphic sex scenes in a PG-13 movie.
However, I will grant you the small concession that there is sexual content in the game, as well as alcohol and drug use, and violence.  However, the game carries an "M" rating, which is the exact same as an "R" rating on a film.  No one under the age of seventeen is permitted to buy the game.  If a sales person sells a copy of an "M" rated game to an underaged customer, their store faces heavy fines.  This is not something that the industry, including the ESBR (Entertainment Software Rating Board), does not take lightly.  The ESRB is in place to rate games based on content, so that potential buyers- including parents- can be aware of what they are about to purchase.
So, let's bring the parents into this.  If a parent buys their child a copy of this game, it is simple negligence and ignorance.  I don't care if the game has been named something as simple as "Mass Effect."  Would someone say that "Silence of the Lambs" sounds like a harmless film simply because it mentions something cute and fluffy in the title?  As I said, the ESRB rates games for this reason, and each game has a letter rating, as well as a description of the content, on the packaging.  Rather than try to take away the rights of responsible people to watch and play what they please, you should encourage irresponsible people to pay a bit more attention to what they consume.
Now, Mr. McCullough, I offer you a chance to regain a shred of honesty.  You've obviously done no research at all into the game you're demonizing, or else you're blatantly lying to people in the hopes of getting a sad measure of support.
Here is a link to one of the sex scenes in question:

All one needs to do is type "Mass Effect Sex" in a YouTube.com search, and videos are available for anyone to view.
Please, sir, post a few of these videos and let your readers decide for themselves just how graphic and offensive the scenes are.  More importantly, maybe you should watch them yourself.
More importantly, to anyone who may read my comments:  Please, don't take everything you read as absolute truth.  If the issue of a potentially violent or sexually-charged video game offends you, do some research on it.  Today's video games are being demonized in much the same way that Elvis and his gyrating hips were demonized roughly half a century ago.

Thank you for taking the time to read my opinions.  I only ask that everyone open their minds a little bit.
